From the Mind of Nick Lane: Brass Quintets
-
the Doo Dah Variations
A tongue-in-cheek deconstruction of the Stephen Foster folk song circa 1850. With a bugler “Call to Races” break in the middle, this composition could be used to offset a program heavy on classic themes, interjecting a little Americana whimsy.
-
Exercise in Futility
A percussive and sometimes dissonant showcase for brass quintet. Presented as a sonic journey of angst-filled tension involving five brass instruments seeking monetary and artistic validation in the highly competitive world of contemporary music!
-
Mozart Adagio
Themes from the hauntingly beautiful Adagio movement (2nd movement) from Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 23. There are opportunities for all players to step out and show their lyrical talents. The genius of Mozart is on full display as the themes pass in crescendoing waves, echoing between players.
-
Toe Tap Knee Slap
A rousing gospel-tinged original that embodies the sounds of Americana. A musical approximation of a country barn dance with men in boots and big hats and girls in frilly skirts yelling yippee… cue the knee-slapping and toe-tapping, with some hootin’ and hollerin’ thrown in. Fast and fun!
-
A Second Chance
Film Noir theme from Andre Previn’s music score for 1962 film “Two for the See Saw”. A haunting jazz-tinged composition arranged for brass quintet with individual solo moments for each instrument. This little-known gem highlights the work of a one-time famous film composer turned classical music icon.

A Remark You Made
Jazz ballad by Weather Report’s Joe Zawinul from the hugely successful “Heavy Weather” album from the 1970’s. A tuba feature of sorts, covering most of the classic Jaco phrases with some possible improvisation from trumpet 1. (written solo is notated with optional chord changes) Interesting jazz harmonies make for a nice change of pace for brass quintet.
