the Doo Dah Variations
A tongue-in-cheek deconstruction of the Stephen Foster folk song circa 1850. With a bugler “Call to Races” break in the middle, this composition could be used to offset a program heavy on classic themes, interjecting a little Americana whimsy.

Exercise in Futility
A percussive and sometimes dissonant showcase for brass quintet. Presented as a sonic journey of angst-filled tension involving five brass instruments seeking monetary and artistic validation in the highly competitive world of contemporary music!
-
Mozart Adagio
Themes from the hauntingly beautiful Adagio movement (2nd movement) from Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 23. There are opportunities for all players to step out and show their lyrical talents. The genius of Mozart is on full display as the themes pass in crescendoing waves, echoing between players.

Toe Tap Knee Slap
A rousing gospel-tinged original that embodies the sounds of Americana. A musical approximation of a country barn dance with men in boots and big hats and girls in frilly skirts yelling yippee… cue the knee-slapping and toe-tapping, with some hootin’ and hollerin’ thrown in. Fast and fun!

A Second Chance
Film Noir theme from Andre Previn’s music score for 1962 film “Two for the See Saw”. A haunting jazz-tinged composition arranged for brass quintet with individual solo moments for each instrument. This little-known gem highlights the work of a one-time famous film composer turned classical music icon.

A Remark You Made
Jazz ballad by Weather Report’s Joe Zawinul from the hugely successful “Heavy Weather” album from the 1970’s. A tuba feature of sorts, covering most of the classic Jaco phrases with some possible improvisation from trumpet 1. (written solo is notated with optional chord changes) Interesting jazz harmonies make for a nice change of pace for brass quintet.

Birdland – Digital Download Version
This has been the most popular chart I wrote for Maynard and was featured on the “Carnival” CD back in the 70’s. This one works well for school bands. Now available in PDF format!
-
Stella By Starlight
A classic standard done in an UN-standard way…..this arrangement is an expansion of a production/recording by Tom Rizzo & Rick Simpson using a “Birth of the Cool” style ensemble and groovy “Moondog” inspired riff. Pdf download $25
-
Take That
Written for Wayne Bergeron and recorded on his “You Call This a Living” CD. Another funky one with plenty of tight ensemble playing and contemporary harmonies. This is available for pdf download $25
-
River Whale
Although written for Maynard’s band, it proved to be little too funky for the times. Luckily Eric Miyashiro set his fabulous Tokyo band after it and they brought it to life in a way MF never could. Another trumpet feature with lots of tight ensemble writing and a rhythm section that can dig on Tower of Power. This is available for pdf download $25
-
The Spirit of St. Fred
A chart I wrote for Maynard featured on his It’s My Time CD….This one works well to feature a trumpet soloist with lyrical aspirations and R&B sensibilities. Features a guitar solo and ensemble moments for the sax & brass sections, this is more user friendly than many of the Maynard charts I did over the years. This is available for pdf download $25
-
Everybody Loves the Blues
An original written with Maynard…so it’s a trumpet feature. Starting as a slow blues (flugelhorn & guitar) it builds into a medium swing with lots of ensemble shouts. Solos by trombone (with Ellington inspired harmonies) and alto sax in straight ahead blues, before returning to a trumpet solo…..eventually trading 2’s with the whole trumpet section. A real tour de force. This is available for pdf download $25

Dave Brubeck’s classic jazz composition in 9/8 time (subdivided 2+2+2+3) A exciting challenge for advanced players.
